The Grab AudioProtect feature is now mandatory for all rides on the Grab ride-hailing service. Grab AudioProtect records audio from the start to the end of the journey for safety purposes.
Grab introduced this system in 2023, but at that time, drivers had to activate it manually in the event of a dispute or emergency.
Recorded audio is stored and encrypted on the passenger's device. If no emergency incident occurs, the audio is deleted after the ride ends; it is not shared with Grab. However, a 15-second clip is sent to Grab if an incident occurs, serving as evidence to resolve issues between the passenger and the driver.
The system is designed to continuously monitor ambient audio during the ride. It identifies incidents requiring Grab's attention, such as screaming, fighting, or the sounds of an accident.
Notifications asking if assistance is needed are sent to both the passenger's and driver's phones via in-app alerts and audio prompts. If there is no response from the passenger's device, Grab's safety team will contact the passenger or driver directly. Emergency assistance will be provided if necessary.
