Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G Review – Long Battery Life, Poor Performance



The rising cost of RAM has manufacturers looking for other ways to maintain the value of their products. The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G comes with a large 10,000mAh battery designed to ensure longer usage despite mediocre multitasking performance. This is not a complete drawback but a clear sign that the focus is on battery life over RAM capacity.


How does it perform in real-world use? Here is my full review based on my daily experience with various usage scenarios.

Usage Experience

Redmi takes a different approach to the design of the Note 17 Pro Max 5G. The round camera module in the center that is a feature of the Note 14 Pro and Note 15 Pro series is now replaced with a thin rectangular bump that looks more modern. This bump houses two small modules along with the main camera in the upper left corner. Redmi returns to using a completely flat screen, in line with the current trend that rejects curved screens. This design is more practical because flat screens are more durable and easy to use every day.


This change does give a fresher look to the Note series, although it is not entirely new because the square camera design and flat display have been used since the Note 12 Pro. The difference this time, it comes with a more neat and distinctive style. Some users welcome it because the design looks simple and neat, but there are also those who consider the use of only dual cameras a step backwards.


When it comes to design and display, it is indeed a matter of taste. Some users prefer a simple minimalist style, while others are attracted to a complex design full of additional elements. The simple camera module on the Note 17 Pro Max 5G looks neat and practical to me, so it should not be considered a shortcoming.


This phone does feel premium in the hand with a solid build that gives confidence every time it is used. In terms of feel, it is a bit reminiscent of the experience of using the Oppo Find X9 Pro, only the size and weight are more noticeable. This factor makes it less suitable for users with small hands or those who are used to using the phone with one hand, as the control may feel a bit challenging.


The full flat display on this device does not cause any problems. In fact, it feels more comfortable because there is no reflection on the edges of the screen, making the scrolling experience and daily activities more enjoyable. This approach is more practical in line with the current trend that rejects curved screens. I myself easily adapt to various types of screens and am sure that most users will also quickly get used to this design.


The button layout on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G is well designed for easy daily use. On the right side there is a power button and audio adjustment with a solid build, while the left side is left empty to give a neater effect. The SIM slot, USB-C port, and speakers are neatly arranged at the bottom. In addition, this device is also equipped with dust and water protection with an IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K rating.


In terms of audio, the device does offer a stereo system with a combination of top and bottom speakers and Dolby Atmos support which makes the sound more immersive than the mono system. However, the speaker on the bottom is more dominant, causing the audio balance to be less than perfect. This situation is quite common on smartphones because even with stereo, the sound quality is still not able to match professional audio systems.


The 6.83-inch AMOLED panel on the Note 17 Pro Max 5G is a promise of specifications on paper. The resolution of 2772 x 1280 pixels with a refresh rate of 120Hz is advertised to be able to provide a sharp and smooth display. HDR10 and Dolby Vision support are also promised to enhance the viewing experience, while TÜV Rheinland certification for low blue light and flicker reduction is said to provide additional comfort during prolonged use.


There is no doubt that the screen is beautiful with clear, rich colors and a peak brightness of 3,500 nits that remains bright even under the hot sun. However, the scrolling experience is not entirely smooth as promised. Occasionally it feels slow even though the panel supports 120Hz which indicates that the operating system and applications are still not fully optimized. This screen also houses a fingerprint scanner under the display which is fast but its position is quite low compared to other phones I have used, making it a little less comfortable to reach.


Internal Hardware – Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 Chip

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G that I received comes with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chip, matched with 8GB of memory and 256GB of internal storage. On paper, these specifications do seem to promise high performance. However, the actual experience has not yet fully met expectations, coupled with the fact that benchmark tests could not be run when the device was received.


This is likely because the unit sent was not yet stable or had not been fully optimized, causing benchmark tests to not be able to be run. It is also possible that it uses an early firmware or system version that blocks the installation of certain applications including benchmark applications.


However, this situation did not prevent me from testing in real time. Throughout use, the scrolling experience on the device felt less than satisfactory. Animations often stuck and application switching did not run smoothly, making the overall experience inconsistent. This situation shows that software support is still immature and fails to fully utilize the capabilities of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chip.


From a strategic point of view, Xiaomi does seem to choose a safe approach by maintaining moderate performance without major updates, possibly influenced by cost factors, risks and current market conditions including the global chip crisis. Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is not a weak device in terms of performance because it is still sufficient for daily tasks. However, the user experience is not smooth enough to compete with competitors in the same segment, while showing a significant gap between the promise of specifications and the reality of use.


Redmi Note 17 Pro Max comes with HyperOS 3 based on Android 16 which brings major changes in terms of interface and ecosystem. More modern icons are combined with Hyper Island, a feature inspired by Apple's Dynamic Island, which displays information such as incoming calls, timers, calendar events and music controls in an attractive way.


AI integration is the main focus with Google Gemini as an intelligent assistant also offering other capabilities such as wallpaper generation, live subtitles, transcription, real-time translation, smart search and automatic writing. From an ecosystem perspective, support has also been expanded not only to Xiaomi devices, but also other Android and Apple such as iPhone, iPad and Mac.


However, the problem of ads in the system does affect the experience that should be premium. HyperOS 3 on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max clearly has not reached a convincing level of maturity with occasional animations getting stuck when scrolling or switching applications. Although this interface is rarely tested by me in general, signs of instability are still noticeable.


Image Quality

The experience of using the device's camera feels quite satisfactory although the end result still depends on the user's skills in controlling the angle, lighting, and composition. Throughout use, the main camera produces fairly saturated colors but still controlled with slightly high contrast which makes the image more vivid. The bright parts are successfully controlled without making the image too white while the shadows are not too dark so that the details are still clearly visible. The overall result provides a good balance between color, light and contrast which makes the image look more natural and pleasing to the eye.


The ultra-wide lens on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G delivers sharp results in every corner without a noticeable fisheye effect, which is rare in its class. Night shots also perform well as the camera still manages to maintain balanced color saturation and contrast. Image quality remains sharp and impressive, although there is a little noise that does not detract from the overall result.


In portrait mode, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G camera provides a pretty convincing experience. The color saturation produced is sufficient, while the bokeh effect looks natural so that the subject can be clearly separated from the background. Skin tones also look more natural without excessive beauty effects, which is something I appreciate because it maintains the authenticity of the face.


However, when used at night, the image quality is slightly affected. The subject separation is not very accurate which makes the results less neat especially at the edges of the subject. Sharpness is also reduced compared to daytime recordings with a little noise which is still acceptable for normal use. Overall, it provides a good experience with satisfactory results during the day and can still be used at night although with some constraints.


Battery

The main highlight of this device is the 10,000mAh battery which is a large number for daily use. To test its durability, I traveled from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka and back to Kuala Lumpur on the same day.


Throughout the trip, my usage can be categorized as extreme which involves scrolling through social media, uploading photos, editing videos using CapCut, taking photos and using the map app continuously. Without relying on the power bank, the battery dropped from 100% to 37% after almost 14 hours of use starting from 11am until 1am the next day.


The next day, the battery was still around 30% at 10am. With lighter usage such as taking photos around Kuala Lumpur and replying to messages, the battery dropped to 14% at 3pm before entering full hibernation mode at 7.10pm. The battery finally ran out on the morning of the third day. Throughout this test, the SIM and internet were always active on the 5G network.


In one session, I also got SOT up to 23 hours and 6 minutes with 6% battery remaining. In another session, 14 hours of use left 37%. Redmi's claim that the device's battery can last up to 3 days is not wrong, but it is more suitable for moderate use. With heavy usage like I did, the battery lasted almost 2 and a half days, which is a very good achievement for a 10,000mAh capacity.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G is not a failed device, but it's also not convincing enough to be considered worth it for everyone. Its main strengths are clearly in its large battery capacity and physical durability, which makes it suitable for users who want a long-lasting phone with a bright display and strong protection. It's especially useful for those who are often outside or need long battery life.


However, in terms of performance and system experience, it's still immature. Occasional stuck animations, less than smooth multitasking, and the presence of ads in the system make the daily experience inconsistent. For users who care about smooth performance, a hassle-free experience, or software maturity on par with competitors, this device may not be worth it. In short, it's worth it for those who prioritize battery and durability, but not for those looking for smooth performance and a premium system experience.
