The entry of numerous foreign e-commerce platforms into the Malaysian market has caused anxiety among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as competing with the offerings of these platforms is perceived to be extremely difficult.
During the Budget 2027 presentation, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the government takes the concerns of these merchants seriously, particularly regarding the entry of such platforms into the domestic market without adequate oversight or enforcement.
He noted that the government would examine consultative and enforcement measures to protect the interests of local MSMEs from unfair competition and to ensure the safety of goods purchased by Malaysians from these overseas platforms.
Furthermore, he confirmed that an E-Commerce Platform Bill would be tabled at an upcoming session as part of efforts to strengthen the accountability of platforms and online sellers.
