Following the Prime Minister’s remarks yesterday, all members of the Malaysian civil service are now prohibited from using the navigation app Waze. As an alternative, there are several other navigation apps available on the market, including one developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority called TuJu.
This decision stems from security risks—specifically concerning movement data—that could affect civil servants in Malaysia. Furthermore, Waze is subject to Israeli law.
With over 1.3 million civil servants in Malaysia, this development may impact the usage of Waze as well as advertising conducted through the platform. Consequently, this shift could also drive advertisers toward alternative applications, such as TuJu, Google Maps, and Pintaz—an app developed by a local independent developer.
