In light of the ban on the use of the Waze app by civil servants, Transport Minister Anthony Loke is now encouraging local developers to utilize open data provided by the government to create their own navigation applications—including data related to transportation.
Various government agencies already offer data on an open basis, making it easier for the public and developers to access and utilize such information.
Previously, Malaysia was ranked number one globally in the Open Data Inventory—a testament to the efforts of the government and various agencies in providing data that is openly accessible and frequently updated for purposes such as research, development, and academic use. Popular open data platforms include Data.gov.my and OpenDOSM.
Currently, two local applications—Tuju and Pintaz—are gaining significant attention, while several other developers have also indicated that they are in the process of building their own navigation apps.
