U Mobile, a local telecommunications company and Malaysia’s second 5G network operator, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce In-Building Connectivity (IBC). This initiative aims to enhance 5G network connectivity within the Immigration, Customs, and Quarantine (ICQC) Complex at Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru.
The complex is connected to the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link—a high-speed rail service between Johor Bahru and Singapore. With the RTS Link expected to transport 40,000 passengers daily between the two locations, reliable and high-speed mobile internet connectivity has become an essential requirement.
This is crucial not only for ensuring a seamless entry and exit process for passengers but also for the 600 civil servants working at the facility.
U Mobile and MRT Corp will explore the commercial, technical, and operational frameworks necessary to provide 4G and 5G in-building coverage at the ICQC. This collaboration will enable U Mobile to integrate its network with MRT Corp’s IBC infrastructure, extending 4G and 5G coverage throughout the facility—subject to final agreements, technical requirements, and relevant regulatory approvals.
The Bukit Chagar ICQC Complex commenced initial operations on October 1st. This phase includes administrative management under the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) and will span until the end of December 2026, allowing customs and immigration authorities to familiarize themselves with the complex. The Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link service is expected to begin operations in January 2027.
