Google Decides to Stop Making Games for Stadia

Google is closing its internal game development division for Stadia.

Google says, instead of making their own games, the company is refocusing on Stadia’s goal, which is to be the home of game streaming owned by many developers.

"Making the best game in class takes years and a huge investment. The cost increases exponentially," Google Vice President and General Manager of Stadia Phil Harrison said in a Google blog post.

“Given our focus on developing Stadia’s proven technology to strengthen collaboration, we decided not to invest further in delivering exclusive content from SG&E’s in -house development team, outside of the planned games in the near future,” Harrison said.

The company also closed its Los Angeles and Montreal game studios. Both are under the Stadia Games & Entertainment (SG&E) flag.

Further, Google says, most of the SG&E team will be transferred to new jobs. However, industry veteran Ubisoft and EA Jade Raymond as head of the Studio Stadia team will leave Google entirely.

In addition to the Stadia Pro subscription service, Stadia will continue to exist. Google may also continue to work on getting exclusive third -party games offered through Stadia.

Games that were previously planned to be released soon will also be launched at the Stadia. Even so, the closure of Stadia’s in-house studio is a serious blow to Google’s ambitions in the field of gaming.

Previously, Google was willing to invest in several game studios. Google also intends to make games by leveraging its cloud technology.

Both of these things mark the company’s serious efforts to introduce exclusivity in the field of gaming that is one day projected to compete with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, which each rely on their independent studios.

The fact that Stadia is no longer in the game creation business makes sense. This is because developing a new game title is a very expensive endeavor.

In early to mid -2020, Google revealed its plans to release 20 new games on the Stadia cloud gaming service. This is stated in the live stream of Stadia Connect.
