Beware, this Android app can take over your phone and steal user data

Recently, an army of safety investigators issued a report to be on the lookout for eight malicious apps that recently appeared on the Google Play Store.

According to Check Point's report, Thursday (11/3/2021), eight malicious applications have allowed criminals to take over smartphones and drain prey's bank accounts.

Investigators at Check Point explained that eight apps that disguised themselves as VPNs to QR codes were actually hiding malware called "Clast82."

The eight dangerous Android apps include:

1. Cake VPN (com.lazycoder.cakevpns)

2.Pacific VPN (com.protectvpn.freeapp)

3. eVPN (com.abcd.evpnfree)

4. BeatPlayer (com.crrl.beatplayers)

5. QR/Barcode Scanner MAX (com.bezrukd.qrcodebarcode)

6. Music Player (com.revosleap.samplemusicplayers)

7. tooltipnatorlibrary (com.mistergrizzlys.docscanpro)

8. QRecorder (com.record.callvoicerecorder)

It is said that the eight apps that contain this malicious software can circumvent Google Play Protect's security detection system.

Successfully fooling Google's security sensing system, the app will "inject" AlienBot Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) containing malicious code into the victim's device.

After that, the criminal can take over the device remotely and access the financial applications on the victim's Android device.

"Once in possession of the device, attackers have the ability to control certain functions, as if they were physically holding the device, such as installing an application on the device, or controlling it with TeamViewer," the research team said.

Further, the investigative force suggested that if any user installed the eight apps, they should remove them immediately.

Not only that, users are also advised to change the password related to the financial account if they have installed one of the eight applications in the list.
