Qualcomm Chips Will Be Produced By Intel

Intel announced their first major customer in the Intel Foundry Services business, namely Qualcomm, the company behind the Snapdragon chip found in many Android phones.
Qualcomm will begin producing its chips at Intel plants using the 20A process in the next few years. It is still unknown when the first Qualcomm chip made by Intel will be launched, or what chip will be produced.

In addition to Qualcomm, Intel Foundry Services also associates another big name, namely Amazon Web Services (AWS). The difference is that Intel will not produce a chip for AWS, but will only use Intel’s packaging solution.

Intel’s 20A technology is scheduled to be released in 2024. The Intel 20A will have a new transistor architecture as well as a RIbbonFET, which is Intel’s first since 2011.

The chip -making business is Intel’s new strategy, part of the IDM 2.0 strategy proposed by new Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger as soon as he takes office. Intel Foundry Services is an important part of this strategy, and will hopefully allow Intel to grow its business beyond just making its own chips.

While Qualcomm and Amazon already exist as large users for Intel’s Foundry Services, Gelsinger previously claimed that Intel has been in talks with more than 100 companies to become users of the chip plant.

Only Intel will face very intense competition in this semiconductor business. The reason is that in this business there are companies like TSMC and Samsung that are already giants, producing chips for Intel’s rival companies, such as AMD and Nvidia.

But Intel is confident it will be able to take the leadership in 2025, by relying on a variety of new technologies in chip manufacturing.
