Richard Branson has flown into space with his corporate company, Virgin Galactic, opening a new era where anyone who can pay can do it. Branson also responded to criticism directed at him.
Critics, for example, throw away fuel that is harmful to the environment, even though the distance is only about five minutes. Then, there are also those who argue that it is better to use trillions of money for more useful things, such as tackling climate change.
Branson says that critics are not fully educated about the importance of outer space to Earth. “Space connects billions of people who aren’t connected, over the phone, in other ways,” he said on The Late Show.
"Every plane we fly, puts satellites on, watches all sorts of things around the world, rainforest degradation, monitors food distribution, even climate change, that's important to us on Earth. We need more spacecraft, not less." Said the man from England.
Richard Branson agrees that the rich should get involved in tackling this problem, but on the other hand, the space business also brings in profits.
“We also have to create a new industry that can create 800 engineers and scientists who can do great things, which can make outdoor space more accessible at a lower environmental cost than in the past,” Branson said.
Virgin Galactic claims carbon emissions in sub-orbital flights are similar to long-haul business aircraft.
"But space flights carry far fewer passengers. Every passenger, every kilometer, on a journey of more than 160 kilometers to the edge of space, uses 12 pounds of CO2," CNN said, criticizing Richard Branson.
