Afghan Women's Robotics Team Flees to Mexico

Five members of the Afghan princess robotics team landed in Mexico to flee. Earlier, other members of the team had fled to Qatar after the Taliban returned to power.

"We give you the warmest welcome in Mexico," Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister Martha Delgado told a news conference at Mexico City International Airport.

The Afghan robotics team has won praise for its achievements by winning several international awards. Innovations they made include an inexpensive hand-operated ventilator for COVID-19 patients.

The Taliban itself has a bad track record when it came to power, especially in restricting women from going to school or working. Although current Taliban leaders have promised women that they will be allowed to go to school, many still choose to flee abroad and be saved by international cooperation.

Mexico itself has promised to help accommodate refugees from Afghanistan, especially women. The first flight of refugees from Afghanistan has been processed by the country.

Earlier, an Afghan princess robotics team that had difficulty leaving the country when the Taliban was in power, was finally safely evacuated and accommodated by Qatar. The nine members, dubbed the Afghan Dreamers, had to fight for days to be evacuated to a safer place.

They appealed to the Government of Canada, specifically to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but to Qatar who ultimately wanted to accept these technological talents.

It is not known how the Afghan Dreamers will travel after the evacuation. However, a number of universities around the world, including some in the United States offer scholarships to this robotics team.
