On Friday (30/8) Russia registered administrative proceedings against WhatsApp over their failure to localize Russian user data.
Interfax news agency reported in excerpts from court documents that Russia will fine WhatsApp between 1 million and 6 million rubles, Facebook as the parent company has not yet responded to the case.
Citing from Reuters, Monday (2/8/2021) the day before Thursday (29/8) Russia has also fined Google Alphabet as much as 3 million rubles because Google has violated the law on users' personal data.
Google also does not remove banned content and often harasses Russian authorities by blocking some YouTube accounts owned by media and pro-Kremlin figures.
The lawsuit is also aimed at Facebook and Twitter for committing similar violations. Facebook and Twitter did not respond to the matter.
The cases are part of a broader rift between Russia and Big Tech. Moscow often fines the social media company for failing to release banned content.
In addition, the Russian government is also trying to pressure foreign technology companies to set up offices in Russia.
