The Most Digital Tokyo 2020 Olympics in History

The Corona Pandemic and technological advances have a direct impact on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The event will be the most digital in history.
As reported by Nikkei Asia, as seen on Thursday (8/8/2021), viewership for the opening broadcast of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is down 36% compared to the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) actually found interesting data that there is a change in the way people around the world watch the Olympics.

"The Tokyo Olympics are the most intense digital engagement ever," the IOC said.

The IOC says Olympic websites and applications have exceeded 50 million since opening. This is a 2 -fold increase from the Rio 2016 Olympics. Olympic -related social media activity generated 2 billion posts in the first week.

TikTok’s video on the Olympics reached 1.4 billion views. The Instagram olympiad increased 12 times and added millions of followers.

“There is a strong bond with the youth of the world,” said Olympic Broadcasting Service CEO Yiannis Exarchos.

Another thing that is driving the change in the way we watch the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to be more digital is the citizens of the Asian Continent. All of the competing Asian athletes encouraged crazed social media activity.

The Asian Nikkei gives an example of India. The hashtag # Olimpik2020 rose to number 2 in Google trends due to India. #Badminton became a trend driven by Indian athlete PV Sindhu who is supported by the Indian community with a total population of 1.3 billion people.

Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia are each creating trends on the internet about athletes from these countries competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The new trend of the digital Olympics

The Nikkei notes that there are many new trends at the Olympics with digital citizens. The distance between athletes and fans is getting lost. Watching streaming without regular TV commentators becomes even more fun. The spectator -free Olympic atmosphere is finally acceptable, as everyone watches online.

Athletes shared live Instagram videos about their lives in the Olympic Village athletes village. Athletes and fans communicate directly with each other through social media.

But this has a negative side. There have been several cases of bullying that have happened to athletes because they have lost in competitions. This was experienced by Japanese table tennis athlete Jun Mizutani, gymnast Mai Murakami. American gymnast Simone Biles withdrew due to mental stress.

This should be a lesson by the Olympic Committee and become a PR in the future. The digital Olympics make athletes more vulnerable to their respective supporters who expect too much or even too much.
