Cool! This Esports Team From Japan Has All Grandparents

Japan has just launched a new esports team called Matagi Snipers. This esports team based in Akita Prefecture is unique after being named the first professional esports team in Japan, all of which are elderly.

The members of the Matagi Snipers team are between 66 and 73 years old. This team was formed to show the benefits of gaming to the elderly, while helping them show off to their children and grandchildren.

Before being launched, Matagi Snipers held an audition which was attended by 21 participants, but only eight people were selected to join. These 8 people were chosen because of their gaming talent, even though some of them are not heavy gamers.

"Until now, I've never played video games," said Eba, a 67-year-old member of the Matagi Snipers, as quoted from Kotaku, Monday (27/9/2021).

Eba added that when he tried playing games he felt this activity could help prevent cognitive impairment because he had to move his hands and eyes at the same time, and discuss strategies with his teammates while playing games. All this helps the brain and the ability to think sharp.

Just like any other professional esports team, all members of Matagi Snipers must undergo training. But due to the age factor of the members, the training is not as heavy as other esport teams, only three times a week.

After starting training, Matagi Snipers plans to stream on Twitch and YouTube starting in October. As the name implies, which is inspired by local hunting groups, Matagi Snipers will focus on shooting games.

Matagi Snipers is not the only esports team in the world whose members are old. In Sweden there is a Silver Snipers team whose members are aged 60 years and over and become one of the CS:GO esports teams.

Japan also has several initiatives to make esports a more inclusive arena for senior citizens. Last year, an esports facility called ISR Esports opened in Kobe, Japan. This facility is intended to introduce video games to residents aged 60 years and over.

Wow, don't be tired, Grandpa!
