Xiaomi denies Lithuanian BIN's accusation of word censorship

Xiaomi has denied accusations by the Lithuanian Cybersecurity and Information Authority (NCSC) regarding censorship of words in the search feature. The allegations are contained in a report titled Cybersecurity assessment of 5G-capable mobile devices that was released recently.

"We take the results of the report seriously. While we dispute the characterization of certain findings, we are also working with independent third parties to assess some of the points raised in the report. We believe in the integrity of our tools and business compliance practices, and we trust These third parties will verify this fact for our users and partners," said a Xiaomi spokesperson in an official statement received by us.

The company made by Lei Jun insists its devices do not restrict or filter communications to and from users. Xiaomi guarantees that it has never and will never limit or block its users' personal behavior such as calling, searching for information, browsing the web, or using third-party communication software. Unfortunately these are not listed in the NCSC report.

The NCSC report shows the use of Xiaomi's ad management software which has limited ability to manage paid and push advertising sent to mobile devices via Xiaomi applications such as Mi Video and Mi Browser. In response, Xiaomi said these things could be used to protect users from offensive content, such as pornography, violence, hate speech, to references that could offend local users.

"This is a common practice in the smartphone industry and the internet around the world," said a Xiaomi spokesperson.

"Xiaomi is committed to operating in a transparent and responsible manner across all jurisdictions. We are also committed to continuing to promote innovation and welcome engagement with users, regulators and other stakeholders," he continued.

The vendor of the Redmi 10 phone maker believes that the NCSC report also falsely indicates improper data management. In fact, Xiaomi claims to be in full compliance with all GDPR requirements, including the handling, processing and transfer of end-user data.

Such compliance applies to all systems, applications and services. Any use of personal data is subject to the valid consent of the end-user and is always in compliance with the local laws and regulations of the European Union and its Member States.

"Xiaomi operates in accordance with the Information Security Management Standards ISO/IEC 27001 (Information Security Management Standards) and the ISO/IEC 27701 Privacy Information Management System (Privacy Information Management System). Since 2016, Xiaomi has also received the Corporate Privacy Certification from TrustArc every year. This is to ensure end-users get the best privacy and security protection," said a Xiaomi spokesperson.

"Xiaomi reiterates that we are committed to maintaining the privacy and security of our users. We operate to the highest standards and comply with all local and regional regulations."
