TSMC Builds Factory in Japan, Sony Becomes First Consumer

TSMC will build a factory in Japan and it will be operational no later than 2023, and Sony is already preparing to become its first customer.

The TSMC factory is indeed located on Sony's property, adjacent to Sony's camera sensor factory in Kumamoto prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.

The TSMC factory will also produce camera sensors, chips for cars and various other products. When fully operational, the plant will be able to produce 40 wafers per month based on 28nm nodes.

Sony also invested in this TSMC factory, the amount was not disclosed but what is clear is that the total investment value for this factory reached USD 7 billion. With this investment, Sony has a small stake in the factory.

The plan to build a factory in Japan was confirmed by TSMC last July, when they said they were actively reviewing various strategies and proposals for the project.

The factory, which is TSMC's first factory in Japan, is part of the USD 100 billion investment that TSMC will make until 2024. Along with the company's expansion in various sectors, such as research and development, and also to deal with the current shortage of chips.

Compared to TSMC's investment to build a factory worth USD 12 billion in Arizona, United States, this factory in Japan which is worth 'only' USD 7 billion is relatively small.

However, it should be noted that the factory in Arizona will be used to produce 5nm chips, while the factory in Japan will only produce 28nm chips, which are cheaper and do not require the latest technology.
