Elon Musk has been named Person of the Year 2021 by Time magazine. Not everyone agreed with Time's decision because the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla was deemed inappropriate.
Republican US lawmaker Pramila Jayapal said Elon Musk avoided paying taxes, so Time's decision was questionable.
"We can't believe that Time magazine named Musk as Person of the Year," said the Pramila team, quoted by us from The Hill, Wednesday (15/12/2021).
"The world's richest man shies away from paying taxes while working-class families struggle to put food on the table and pay rent," they added.
They judge that the rich continue to get richer and the profits from their companies continue to grow, even during the Corona pandemic.
Elon Musk has also been criticized for blocking unions at his companies. Nevertheless, Time chose it for various reasons.
Musk is considered a figure who will have a major influence throughout 2021, from being the richest person in the world to his success in space exploration.
"For creating solutions to existential crises, for embodying the possibilities and dangers of the age of tech giants, for driving society's boldest and most disruptive transformations, Elon Musk is Time's 2021 Person of the Year," said Time Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal.
"Even Elon Musk's adventures in space are a direct line from the first Person of the Year, Charles Lindbergh, who was chosen by editors in 1927 to commemorate his historic first solo trans-Atlantic flight over the Atlantic Ocean."
