Concept Luna, Dell's Eco-Friendly Product at CES 2022

Dell Technologies unveiled a new concept, designed to reduce e-waste, titled Concept Luna. Where the focus is on ensuring every product, from laptops, PCs and their hardware, is environmentally friendly and can be recycled. This technology was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 in Las Vegas, United States.

"With growing concerns about the climate crisis, e-waste and resource constraints, our question was how we could encourage reuse and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Dell products," said Glen Robson, Chief Technology Officer, Client Solutions. Groups.

The essence of Concept Luna is very simple, which is to recycle and use it. As for the future vision by carrying out Reuse, Repair and Recreating, as we received information, Friday (7/1/2022).

Reduces the number of bolts up to 10 times. So it only takes four bolts that are presented in the component. This also makes the repair and reinstallation process faster.

Features a palm rest construction, for easy repair and installation. Also the keyboard mechanism, designed to be easy to clean, is separated from the components and then recycled.

Offers years of battery life via a deep-cycle cell, which allows for a long charge.

Bio-based Printed Circuit Board (PCB), made with flax fiber as the baseboard and water-soluble polymer as glue. Facilitates the recycling process when separating metal parts and components from the baseboard.

Meanwhile, according to them, one of the components that consume the most energy is the motherboard. Therefore, Dell tried to reduce the total size to about 75% (currently smaller than 5,580 mm2). Including reducing the number of components in it by about 20%, it is estimated that the carbon footprint of the motherboard can be reduced by up to 50%.

"The Concept Luna idea and future developments, as well as our other efforts, are meant to continue to build on the circular economy leadership that already exists across Dell's current product portfolio," said Robson.

He added that the goal is to re-examine, and reconsider every step of the product life cycle. So that it can produce Dell products, which are more sustainable and environmentally friendly in the future.
