Meta Turn Off Online Dating Services on Facebook

In 2019 Facebook decided to try to enter the online dating market. Then, they decided to expand their offer in 2021 with a video dating service called Sparked.

Unfortunately, this service became a short-lived experiment as Meta decided they were going to shut the service down.

Sparked is not a full Facebook product, but a product of one of its divisions, New Product Experimentation. As the division's name implies, they test out new product ideas before deciding whether they can be developed into products.

With Sparked, companies can stage a pre-planned event among local residents of a region. Users who take part in this event can do online dating via video.

Considering that it was still a pandemic and it was more difficult to meet other people in person, then the concept of this idea looked like an interesting and quite good idea

However, this platform seemed to lack interest until it was finally decided to shut down.

"We started building Sparked in late 2020 to help people find love through experiences based on kindness." write the service in an email to its users as quoted by us from Ubergizmo, Wednesday (19/1/2022).

Since then, thanks to your regular input and feedback, we developed the service in the best part we could, learned a lot and made connections between users. Like many good ideas, some can continue and some, like Sparked, have to end."
