Revealed, the Facts Behind the Strange Shaped Human Skull

The skull found in Peru is called by some as alien-like, because of its elongated shape, unlike an ordinary human skull. After doing research, revealed other facts behind it.

As quoted from Unilad, the 2,000-year-old skull is believed to have been that of a Peruvian soldier during his lifetime. Research states that this man has undergone surgery on his head.

This fairly advanced operation was probably one of the first in the world, proving that ancient people were capable of it.

It is believed the soldier was badly injured in battle, and underwent surgery to install metal to repair his fractured skull.

"This is an elongated skull from Peru with metal surgically implanted after he returned from war some 2000 years ago," said a spokesman for the Museum of Osteology in Oklahoma, which stores the skull.

"We know he survived the operation. Based on the condition of the damaged skull bones, it could be seen that the skulls were tightly fused. The operation was a success," he added.

Peruvian surgeons of the time are believed to have invented a variety of advanced surgical procedures to treat injured skulls. At that time, soldiers' heads were vulnerable to injury because of the weapons used, such as catapults.

On the other hand, it is quite common to find skulls with this kind of elongated shape in Peru. So his skull became like that not because of the surgery, but because of another practice that was done before.

The ancient people of what is now Peru are said to have a long history of using head binding techniques. This culture shapes human skulls into unusual shapes.

"Intentional head shaping is a form of body culture modification that marks different things, such as a person's identity, rites of passage, or occupation," said Melissa Murphy, professor of anthropology at the University of Wyoming.
