The Impact of a Powerful Eruption, Tonga Faces the Internet 'Apocalypse'

A massive volcanic eruption followed by a tsunami, caused a lot of damage in Tonga. In fact, the internet network is expected to crash in quite a long time.

As quoted by us from the BBC, some communications and electricity on the island have started to recover, but the internet has not been turned on due to a fault in the submarine cables.

"We've just received some vague information, but it looks like the cable has been cut," said Dean Veverka, director of the Southern Cross Cable Network.

"It could take up to two weeks to repair. The ship for the cable is closest to Port Moresby," he added, where the location is about 4,000 kilometers from Tonga.

Southern Cross itself helps the owner of the 872 kilometer internet cable, namely Tonga Cable Limited. This cable connects Tonga with Fiji and then the rest of the world.

As reported, the eruption of an underwater volcano has caused a tsunami that reached Tonga and other countries. The eruption was so loud that it could be heard as far as New Zealand. Hours later, Tonga's internet and telephone lines were cut off, leaving the island of 105,000 unreachable for communication.

Tonga or the Kingdom of Tonga is located in the South Pacific Ocean, about 3,200 km east of Brisbane, Australia. Citing information from UNDP and the CIA World Factbook, Tonga is a country in Polynesia in the form of an archipelago. The capital city of this country is called Nuku'alofa, which is on the island of Tongatapu.

Of the 177 islands, 52 are inhabited by 103 thousand inhabitants. As many as 70% of the population in Tonga resides on the main island of Tongatapu.
