Meta Release Extensions in Browser Make WhatsApp Web Safer

Meta released Code Verify, an extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers to validate the WhatsApp Web version. This extension is claimed to be able to make sending messages via WA Web safer.

Users have several options to log in to the WhatsApp service and start communicating with individuals or groups. Apart from using Android or iOS phones, users can also use WhatsApp Desktop, Windows 10 and 11 applications, as well as WhatsApp Web.

Code Verify will confirm that the WhatsApp Web code used has not been tampered with or changed. This will make it difficult for potential attackers to compromise the data or privacy of WhatsApp's end-to-end encrypted messages while using in the browser.

Meta promises that the extension logs neither data nor metadata, and does not share any information with WhatsApp. Messages are not read or accessed, and neither Meta nor WhatsApp will know if the Verification Code is being used in the browser.

"The sole purpose of Code Verify is to verify the integrity of WhatsApp Web to ensure that the site is safe to use," said Meta.

Code Verify checks the integrity of the WhatsApp Web service when the user connects using the browser where the extension is installed. This extension will display a green, orange or red icon indicating whether WhatsApp Web has been successfully validated, code integrity check failed, or validation failed.

WhatsApp users immediately know if something is wrong when the icon turns orange or red when they connect to WhatsApp Web.

Code Verify will run immediately when the user opens WhatsApp Web. If the WhatsApp Web code has been fully validated, the Code Verify icon in the browser will appear green.

If the Code Verify icon is orange, it means it needs to refresh the page or another browser extension is interfering. In this case, Code Verify will recommend the user to pause other browser extensions.

If the Code Verify icon is red, this indicates that there may be a security issue with the WhatsApp Web code being used.

If you are interested, you can download Code Verify on Chrome and Edge. Firefox users have to be a little patient because Meta is still developing it.
