US billionaire who is also the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk bought shares of Twitter on Monday which caused the shares of the social media company to soar.
Musk, who has more than 80 million followers on the platform became Twitter’s largest shareholder following the purchase of 73.5 million shares.
The investment is worth about US $ 2.9 billion (about RM12.23 billion) based on the share price on Friday.
Musk is now the richest man in the world, with a fortune worth US $ 287.6 billion (about RM1,212.95 billion) according to Forbes.
The billionaire conducted an opinion poll of his followers, recently.
Saying "freedom of speech is essential for a functioning democracy," Musk on March 25 launched a poll on Twitter asking: "Do you believe Twitter adheres to this principle?"
More than two million people voted in the poll, with more than 70 percent saying, "no."
“Just buy Twitter,” was one of the first responses from tens of thousands of users.
Conservatives in the U.S. have long complained that the platform is blocking the voices of right -wing groups, a claim the company has denied.
