Scientists Successfully Grow Plants Using Soil From The Moon

Can we use surface soil for cultivating? This is a question that needs to be answered as there are plans to build colonies on the surface of the moon. The answer is yes through a study conducted by researchers from the University of Florida.

In experiments conducted using soil samples taken by the Apollo 11, 12 and 17 missions, Arabidopsis tree seeds successfully germinated after being supplemented with nutrients. Because the sample borrowed by NASA was only 12 grams, scientists planted the seeds in an iron glove used for sewing.

Although the seed germinates, it grows at a slower rate than on earth and shows signs of stress. Previously several experiments have been performed using soil that has been altered to have the same characteristics as on the surface of the moon. This is the first time a successful experiment has been performed on earth with real soil samples.
