June 8 is World Ocean Day or World Oceans Day. There are still many mysteries of the oceans that have not been revealed by scientists.
World Ocean Day is a moment when people around the world become more concerned about the ocean. This year's theme is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.
The sea does need revitalization from all the damage it has experienced. In addition, the sea holds a lot of potential that we don't know yet.
Scientists are still continuing to research the oceans intensively. Because, there are still many mysteries stored there. There are still many mysterious natural phenomena in the ocean for which there is no scientific answer, as reported by Reader's Digest, Wednesday (8/6/2022). The following are among them.
8 Unsolved Mysteries of the Ocean:
1. The mystery of the ocean floor
Don't be surprised, 95 percent of the ocean floor is unexplored. Until there is talk, scientists know more about the surface of Mars than the ocean floor on Earth.
Scientists have mapped the ocean floor, but what is there? Scientists also conduct research such as Seabed 2030 to examine what is at the bottom of the ocean.
2. Ocean light phenomenon
The milky sea phenomenon is a phenomenon where the sea lights up as white as milk at night. Sailors and tourists have seen it. What is the scientist's answer?
It is a bioluminescent organism from the plankton family called Dinoflagellates. The mystery is that scientists are still not sure how and why these organisms congregate in such large numbers that they can be seen from the sky.
3. Mysterious purple ball
In 2016, a team of scientists from the Ocean Exploration Trust discovered a strange purple round creature on the ocean floor off the coast of California. This species was eventually named Blobus purpilis. Scientists suspect it is a jellyfish, but there is a new hypothesis that this creature belongs to the velutinida family, a type of sea slug.
4. Kraken giant squid
The legend of the giant squid Kraken was made into the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. But scientists have been trying to solve this mysterious legend for a long time. Is there really a giant squid in the ocean?
In 2005, The Royal Society Publishing published a scientific report on the giant squid Architeuthis off the seas of the North Pacific Ogasawara Islands. Its size is larger than 8 meters. However, scientists still don't know how big this squid will be.
5. Jellyfish live forever
There is a mysterious jellyfish with the Latin name Turritopsis dohrnii. His nickname is cool, immortal jellyfish. When starved, physically damaged and other threats, these jellyfish can turn back into babies. Or, in the jellyfish's life cycle, it reverts to a polyp.
Scientists are still curious how the old jellyfish can be young again. The hope, scientists can find a cure for cancer from studying these animals or even humans can imitate eternal life.
6. Bermuda Triangle
Three points from Miami, Puerto Rico and Bermuda are already known as the Bermuda Triangle. The legend of ships and planes missing in this area is well known.
Scientists have proven that based on statistics, the accident rate in the Bermuda Triangle is the same as in other areas. But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) admits the region has problems with rapid weather changes due to the Gulf Stream, a compass that points to true north instead of magnetic north and methane gas escaping from the ocean.
7. Mariana Trench
The Mariana Islands in Guam have the deepest place on Earth called the Mariana Trench. The depth is 10,984 km below sea level.
A record dive was made in 2019. Victor Vescovo with the Triton 36000/2 submarine managed to descend to 10.928 km. Almost touching the bottom of the trough. Until now scientists are still finding strange new species and some giants in the Mariana Trench. The research is far from over.
8. Sea dragon
One more mystery of the ocean is the myth of the sea dragon in a number of cultures, including in Indonesia. Is there really a water dragon or a sea dragon?
According to scientists, the animal closest to the sea dragon is the Giant Oarfish. This fish is long and flat like a dragon and is known to grow up to 17 meters. Whether it can be as big as this animal in the ocean, scientists are also still curious.
