It's terrible, Facebook leaves in droves of teenage users

Facebook's popularity among Gen Z seems to be waning. The results of the latest survey show that Facebook continues to be abandoned by teenage internet users.

This was revealed from the results of a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center on teenagers, technology, and social media. As a result, only 32% of US teens aged 13-17 years still use Facebook, down drastically from 71% in 2014-2015.

According to Jules Terpak, a Gen Z content creator, today's teens think of Facebook as a platform that is synonymous with their parents. Mark Zuckerberg's social media is also considered not to offer much new for teenage users.

"The culture instilled by the average Facebook user is very unrelated to what attracts Gen Z to a platform today, and instead radiates energy like spam email," said Terpak, as quoted by TechCrunch, Saturday (12/8/2022). ).

Terpak's assumption is correct. According to a Pew report, Facebook is still the most popular social media platform among adults and is still used by 69% of adult internet users in the United States.

So, what social media platform is Gen Z's number one choice right now? It turns out that YouTube is the most popular platform among teenagers and Google's platform is used by 95% of US teenagers.

But for traditional social media that prioritizes user interaction, the winning platform is TikTok. This application made by ByteDance is accessed by 67% of teenage users in the US.

At a time when Facebook was adrift, Instagram was even more popular among teenagers. The photo-sharing app was used by 62% of teens in 2022, up from 52% in 2014-2015.

Several other social media platforms that are also widely used by teenagers include Snapchat (59%), Twitter (23%), Twitch (20%), WhatsApp (17%), Reddit (14%), and Tumblr (5%).

Pew also asked 1,316 teens surveyed how often they used social media apps. As a result, 19% of adolescents admitted that

'almost constantly' opens YouTube, followed by TikTok (16%), Snapchat (15%), and Instagram (10%).

The large number of teenagers who admit that they almost constantly open social media applications looks worrying. Moreover, 36% of teenagers admit that they spend too much time on social media.

But fortunately, 45% of teens surveyed said they would have no problem quitting social media.
