Samsung wants sales of folding screen cellphones to beat the Galaxy Note

Samsung is really determined to make folding screen phones a mainstream product. This South Korean vendor even has a foldable device that beats one of its most popular devices, the Galaxy Note.

This was conveyed by Samsung's Vice President of Mobile Experience Division, Sung Soo Kim. In a conference call following the announcement of Samsung's financial statements, Kim said Samsung would push sales of folding screen phones to boost its mobile division's profits.

"In the second half we will continue to maintain the sales momentum of our S series and also use the new foldable series that will be launched to generate sales volume above the sales volume that we previously reported using the Note series," Kim said, as quoted by CNBC, Monday (1 /8/2022).

It is not known how long it will take Samsung to boost sales of folding screen phones to beat the Galaxy Note. Samsung itself is preparing to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 on August 10.

Samsung first launched the Galaxy Note line in 2011 and the series was immediately popular due to its large screen and stylus-equipped display. But because the screen size of mobile phones is getting bigger, including the Galaxy S series, finally the Galaxy Note line is turned off and replaced with the Galaxy S Ultra.

To beat sales of the Galaxy Note, Samsung must work hard to push sales of its foldable phone. By comparison, Samsung shipped 190 million Galaxy Note units over its lifetime, according to IDC data.

So far, Samsung has shipped more than 10 million units of folding screen phones. This figure is fairly reasonable considering that Samsung first introduced the Galaxy Z Fold in 2019.

Meanwhile, Samsung shipped 12 million units of the Galaxy Note 20, which is the last variant of the Galaxy Note, and 14 million units of the Galaxy Note 10. Meanwhile, shipments of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 were around eight million units.

According to IDC analyst Bryan Ma, Samsung's ambition to focus on the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines to gain more profit makes sense considering both are premium lines with high margins.

"Even if the Note line still has dedicated fans, it's also a decade old, so putting the company's ambitions in foldables could put the company at the forefront," said Ma.
