News of the blocking of services such as Steam, Epic Games, Dota, and Paypal by the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) worldwide, after a number of foreign media participated in reporting this news.
From our observation, this blocking was reported by media such as Reuters, Engadget, to The Verge. In Reuters, for example, it was written that Indonesia blocked access to search engine services such as Yahoo, PayPal, and a number of other sites because they did not register for Private Electronic System Operators (PSE).
"This registration is required on the basis of rules created at the end of November 2020 and gives the government the power to compel platforms to disclose certain user data, and remove content deemed unlawful or disruptive to public safety," Reuters wrote.
Meanwhile, The Verge cites a report from the digital rights NGO Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) which calls this regulation invasive of human rights, because it can force platforms to submit to the Indonesian government, which can block access if they do not comply with applicable laws.
EFF has also written to Kominfo to urge the repeal of this invasive content moderation rule, as quoted by us from The Verge, Sunday (31/7/2022).
It was previously reported that Kominfo had conveyed the blocking warning to them long ago, it's just that until the specified limit, Steam Cs had not yet registered for the Private Scope Electronic System Operator (PSE) until July 29, 2022 at 23.59 WIB.
As a result, based on information from Kominfo, there are eight PSE Private Scopes that have been officially blocked, namely Yahoo search engine or search engine, Steam, Dota, Counter-Strike, Epic Games, Origin.com, Xandr.com, and PayPal.
This blocking caused a stir and protested by netizens, who reacted immediately. Even as of this morning, Sunday (31/7/2022), the hashtag #BlokirKominfo is still at the top of Indonesia's Twitter trending topics, as well as the words PayPall which is in 2nd position and Steam which is in 5th position.
