AMD Updates The Model Numbers Of Their Mobile Processing Chips

With the upcoming launch of the AMD Ryzen 7000 series of processing chips, AMD has started to update their laptop-class processing chip offering due to the launch of desktop and laptop-class processing chips that will turn the heads of many users.

Changes are made to the model names of the laptop processor chip series because for these models, AMD will still use previously launched cores depending on the needs.

Typically, model names with higher numbers are more powerful processing chips, and while this hasn't changed, each number shown on an AMD Ryzen processing chip for laptops will now come with specific details.

Taking the example of an AMD Ryzen 5-7640U processing chip, each number on the four numbers of the processing chip model has its own details.

The first number shows the year the processing chip was launched. The number 7 is for 2023, 8 for chips launched in 2024 and so on. The second number shows the level of the processing chip. 1 and 2 are for Athlon processing chips, 3-4 are for Ryzen 3, 5-6 are for Ryzen 5, 7 and 8 are for Ryzen 7/9, and 9 is for Ryzen 9.

The third figure shows the chip architecture used by the CPU. 1 is for Zen 1, 2 is for Zen 2 and so on. The fourth number is to determine whether the processing chip is in the low or high power lower class segment by using the number 0 or 5.

The letters HX/HS/H/U/C/e used at the end show the amount of power that will be used by this processing chip. HX is the highest with a power consumption of 55W and above, U around 15-28W and e below 9W.

The use of this processing chip model name will be introduced when the AMD Mendocino (based on Zen 2) and Dragon Range (based on Zen 4) processing chips are introduced by them starting early next year.
