Elon Musk recently outlined Twitter's new mission after he bought it for $44 billion. But the mission has become the subject of debate between Musk and Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey.
The debate between Musk and Dorsey began when Musk said he wanted to turn Twitter into the most accurate source of information about the world. Musk's tweet on Twitter was immediately commented on by Dorsey.
"Accurate according to whom? tweeted Dorsey, as quoted from India Today, Tuesday (11/8/2022).
Musk then replied that the accuracy of the information on Twitter would follow the assessment of the Community Notes. The richest man in the world indirectly admitted to changing the name of the Birdwatch feature to Community Notes.
To note, Birdwatch is a new Twitter program launched to fight misinformation. Birdwatch relies on volunteers and mainstream Twitter users as contributors to determine content accuracy and fact check.
The Birdwatch program was first introduced in 2020, when Dorsey was still Twitter's CEO. In his tweet, Dorsey said the name Birdwatch was much better than Community Notes.
"Community notes is the most boring Facebook name ever," says Dorsey.
"Not everyone has to use the word 'bird' in their name! There are too many groups of birds fighting each other internally on Twitter. Angry Birds," Musk replied.
This debate is interesting considering that Dorsey has previously supported Musk to buy Twitter. Dorsey even asked Musk to join Twitter's board of directors, long before the Tesla CEO revealed his intention to buy Twitter.
Twitter itself has undergone many changes since being led by Musk. One of them, Musk fired four Twitter executives -- including Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal -- and thousands of employees were laid off.
Dorsey then spoke up about the layoffs, and apologized for feeling partly responsible.
"Partners on Twitter both past and present are strong and resilient. They always find a way no matter how difficult it is at the moment," he wrote on Twitter.
"I realized that many were angry with me. I am responsible for why everyone is in this situation, I grew the company too fast, I am sorry for that," he added.
