Technology has issues where it doesn't work well for all users. Among the early issues with web camera technology was that the facial recognition system did not detect the faces of black users and the compact camera system did not detect the faces of East Asian users who were smiling. Now a class-action lawsuit has been filed against Apple because the sensors on the Apple Watch don't give accurate readings to dark-skinned users.
A lawsuit was filed in New York by Alex Morales last week who claimed the Apple Watch's blood oxygen concentration scanner was inaccurate because of his dark skin. Morales purchased an Apple Watch between 2020 and 2021. Apple is said to have never issued a disclaimer that the oximeter sensor does not give an accurate reading hence this suit was filed.
Apple has yet to issue a statement on this lawsuit. In the disclaimer they published earlier, they only said the oximeter would not give an accurate reading on bare skin alone. They also say that Apple Watch readings can only be used as a basic gauge to measure health but not a substitute for a real medical device.
This month has not been a good month for Apple because last week they were found to be infringing on AliveCor's ECG patent which could lead to Apple Watch sales being blocked in the United States.
