Amazing Ancient Underground City Found Under House

In 1963, a man in Nevsehir Province, Turkey, broke into the underground walls of his house in the course of renovations. Behind it, he found a tunnel that led to an amazing ancient underground city.

The man, who chose to remain anonymous, found more tunnels and more dungeons. It turns out that there is a hidden city called Derinkuyu.

As quoted by us from Metro, the underground city had apparently been abandoned for several centuries. After being excavated, there are a total of 18 levels and could be home to around 20,000 people.

There are various kinds of facilities, including places of worship, schools, even horse stables inside. According to archaeologists from the Ministry of Culture of Turkey, Derinkuyu was made in volcanic rocks.

It is believed by scientists that the city was created between the 7th and 8th centuries, by the Phrygians. This culture reached its peak during the Byzantine era. Such cellars are usually used for storage.

According to some historical traces, the underground city of Derinkuyu has been a human habitation for centuries. For example the early Christians were there, to escape persecution from the Romans so they went into hiding.

Today, the underground city of Derinkuyu is open to the public and frequented by tourists. However, only about 10% of the entire dungeon can be visited.
