The Google Message app has now become the default messaging app for most Android devices. This is to continue Google's efforts in promoting the use of RCS, which is a competitor to iMessage which is claimed to be more secure.
Now, Google Message has been updated to support group messages of up to 100 people – up from 21 people before. Not only that, these group messages also support end-to-end encryption for a safer and more secure messaging experience.
But for now, this feature is only limited to Google Message beta users and has not yet been rolled out to everyone. In my tests, group messages still count as SMS/MMS on both Android devices with the RCS feature enabled.
