Xiaomi Tag Review – User-Friendly Smart Tracker

As someone who sometimes loses things, the opportunity to try out the Xiaomi Tag provided a meaningful experience. After more than a month of use, I found this device to be helpful in my daily routine and made me realize how useful such a tracker can be. During that period, the Xiaomi Tag felt user-friendly because its functions were easy to understand. This review is written based on my personal experience as a new user and its impact on my daily life.

Device Design

After a month of using the Xiaomi Tag, my experience felt good and reassuring in various situations. I hung it on my house key, kept it in my backpack and took it with me on work trips abroad. In all situations, it worked consistently and reliably.

I started this review evaluation from the physical design because the first impression is very important. It is small in size, simple in shape and easy to carry without feeling burdensome. Although I did not have the opportunity to evaluate other trackers comprehensively, I had the opportunity to hear the experiences of friends and research the information on the official website so that some comparisons could be made.

Apple AirTag looks premium but requires additional accessories to hang while Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is neater but only exclusive to Galaxy devices. This constraint makes Xiaomi Tag more free to use because it can be hung directly without additional accessories and works across Apple and Android ecosystems. This is where Xiaomi Tag really stands out.

Over a month of use, its advantages are becoming clearer day by day. The design with curved edges makes it easy to hang directly, and every time you use it, the experience feels convincing. Friendly for new users, at the same time suitable for anyone who wants a simple tracker that is easy to use in their daily routine.

The best part about using Xiaomi Tag is its affordable price. A single unit is sold at RM79, while the set package is offered at RM299, which is almost half cheaper than other competitors. The price factor alone is enough to make it a smart choice, especially for new users. Xiaomi Tag is not just an ordinary tracker but a small device that gives confidence in daily use.

I did not have a problem with its size because it is suitable for daily use. The design without large logos, excessive glossy finish or decorative elements such as RGB lights makes it look minimalist. This simple style has a positive effect on daily use. I hang it on my house key, keep it in the pocket of my sling bag or small purse and it doesn't bother me at all.

However, there is one thing that I think could be improved, which is the color choice. The white unit I used looks beautiful and simple, but it gets dirty and scratches easily when combined with the key. In the future, Xiaomi could consider other color variations such as gray or black that are easier to maintain. In addition, it is also worth offering a cheerful color option so that it not only functions as a tracker but also stands out as a cute accessory like a keychain.

How Does It Work?

Xiaomi Tag proves that it is not just a cheap tracker. It comes with support for Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. Although it cannot be used simultaneously, users are free to choose the ecosystem that suits their needs. I myself have tried it on an iPhone device with iOS 26 and on Android with Android 16. The installation process feels very easy, as if it was designed specifically for new users. Within a few minutes, Xiaomi Tag appeared in the relevant application and was ready to use.

I started trying it on my iPhone. After activating the Xiaomi Tag, I opened the Find My app and went to the Items menu. From there, I pressed the plus (+) button to add a new device. The instructions that appeared on the screen were simple and easy to understand, so soon the Xiaomi Tag was successfully paired without any problems. After the connection was completed, I could immediately track the location directly through the Find My app. The sound function was very helpful when finding misplaced items while Lost Mode provided peace of mind if it was lost.

The experience of trying the Xiaomi Tag on an Android device also did not show any significant differences. After activation, users could open the Google Find Hub app and select the menu to add a new device. The instructions on the screen were simple and easy to understand, and the connection process was successful in a short time. Once completed, the location could be tracked directly through the app. Overall, the experience on Android was almost the same as on the iPhone where both were easy to use and convincing.

However, there are still some differences between Android and iOS. Xiaomi Tag basically offers the same basic functions on both systems including the connection process, changing the name, battery notification, offline search, Lost Mode, NFC support and anti-tracking features. However, on Android devices, software updates are not supported, while on iOS it is possible. The connection method is also different with Android using an automatic pop-up while iOS requires users to manually add devices via the Find My app.

In addition, Lost Mode on Android will be automatically turned off when the tag reconnects to the phone. On the other hand, on iOS users can manually manage Lost Mode including adding contact information such as phone number or email so that others can help return the lost item. In terms of the number of devices, iOS limits up to 32 tags, while Android has no limit.

Usage Experience

Xiaomi Tag works silently by sending a secure Bluetooth signal. Other devices nearby and part of the Find network will detect the signal and then anonymously upload the location to the cloud. All information is protected with end-to-end encryption, so only I can see where the tag is.

iPhone device UI (Apple Find My)

In real life, Xiaomi Tag gives confidence because it works in a simple and clear way. Once I left my handbag at home, a notification from the Find My application appeared shortly after. When the application was opened, the location was shown accurately and a sense of relief came in an instant. Through the application, I can see the map and know the distance and direction to get to the location. If using an Apple device, it is directly connected to Apple Maps.

Android device UI (Google Find Hub)

The application interface is also clear with easy-to-understand colors and icons and even provides directions according to transportation modes such as car, walking or train. Estimated time of arrival (ETA) and travel distance are also displayed, making the search more organized. In addition, marked items (Mark) can be shared with family members or close friends. Location sharing also adds a layer of security because other people can help track the items in case of an emergency.

Other real-life experiences also prove its effectiveness. Once my car keys “disappeared” during the chaos of going to the office. In that state of anxiety, I immediately activated the sound function via phone. The echoing “beep” sound led me to track down the key as if I was on a secret mission. I followed the sound until I finally managed to find the car key. This situation clearly shows how basic functions such as notifications and warning sounds can have a big impact on daily life.

In addition, the Xiaomi Tag comes with an IP67 rating which means it is dust and splash resistant and can survive being submerged in fresh water up to one meter for thirty minutes. As far as my experience goes, it has never been submerged in water but has only been exposed to rain but is still working fine to this day.

In terms of battery, the Xiaomi Tag uses a removable CR2032 battery. This type of battery is commonly used in watches and small electronic devices because it is compact in size and can store energy stably. Xiaomi states that this battery can last more than a year with normal use. As far as my experience goes, the battery indicator in the application still shows full level.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Tag is a small gadget that is quiet but works well. It is suitable for daily use and is worth having for anyone who is new to trying smart trackers. With a minimalist design, affordable price, and support across the Apple and Android ecosystems, it provides peace of mind that important items can always be tracked. Although simple, it comes as a small companion that helps without being excessive, making it a useful option for everyday life.

Xiaomi Tag is perfect for those who often lose or misplace items such as keys, wallets, or handbags. It is also useful for students and workers who carry a lot of important items, travelers who want to track backpacks or luggage, and parents who want to monitor their children's belongings. For new users of smart trackers, Xiaomi Tag offers an easy-to-understand experience at a more friendly cost than many other options on the market.

A single Xiaomi Tag unit is sold at RM79, while a set of 4 Xiaomi Tags is offered at RM299.
