Lucid Motor is a company that has been around since 2007 but only started offering their luxury electric cars since 2021. However, they have just launched a 469 horsepower electric motor that weighs only 32 kilograms and is capable of rotating at a speed of 19,500 RPM.
The size is also compact which is 10.2 x 10.5 x 13.5 inches but also houses the transmission system, reverser, differential and electric motor itself. With a weight of 32 kilograms, it is much lighter than the electric motor of other vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 which reaches 90 kilograms which produces 283 horsepower. This motor is designed to be compact and light as it is used for Formula E Gen 3 racing cars that have already started their new season earlier this month.
One of the biggest issues with electric vehicles is that they are too heavy. Therefore any form of weight reduction can improve vehicle performance as well as reduce the use of electrical power when operating.
At this time Lucid Motor says that this electric motor will only be offered for Formula E. But just as Formula 1 is where automotive technology is tested before being offered to consumers, it is not surprising that Formula E will be the testing ground for electric motors before also being used in future electric vehicles.
