DNA analysis technology has succeeded in uncovering the case of the cruel murder of 4 University of Idaho students. The suspect named Bryan Kohberger has been arrested. But so far, the motive has not been revealed. What do you think?
As reported, the hard work done by investigators revealed that DNA analysis found on the knife sheath at the crime scene with Kohberger's father's DNA, had a 99.9998 percent match. The father's DNA was recovered from an item in his house's trash that was retrieved by FBI agents.
The DNA evidence was deemed highly convincing. The SWAT team then moved to Kohberger's location, namely his parents' home in Pennsylvania, as soon as the warrant was obtained.
So, a former FBI investigator, Pete Yachmetz, tried to analyze what the perpetrators' reasons were. In his opinion, Kohberger's killing was triggered by the social problems he was experiencing and the possibility of an 'incel complex'.
"The murders may well have been an attempt to demonstrate some type of dominance," Pete is quoted as saying in the New York Post.
Brutal killings in which the victim is stabbed multiple times may be based on the perpetrator's social problems. "I believe continuing to stab the victim is extreme rage and uncontrollable rage," he said.
"It's also possible that he has some kind of incel complex," Pete added. So what are incels?
The term incel stands for 'involuntary celibate', or the free translation is forced single. This term is generally used to refer to men who have difficulty forming romantic or sexual relationships.
The term is usually associated with online forums of misogyny, even in extreme cases, criminals. In 2021, an incel named Tres Genco is arrested for planning a mass shooting of 3,000 female university students. Genco, 22, pleaded guilty and faces life in prison.
While not a precise psychological definition, Psychology Today notes that men who identify as incel often have poor mental health, feelings of victimhood, low self-esteem, and loneliness.
On the other hand Dr. Carole Lieberman, a forensic psychiatrist also said she believed the suspect fit the incel profile. "I said from the start that he was an Incel," he said, where the victims were many women.
