The serial killer case in Bekasi-Cianjur left deep wounds for the community. This case quickly got the attention of netizens and of course criticism. So far, nine victims have been entangled in the serial killings in Cianjur and Bekasi.
Launching Syfy, Friday (20/1/2023) there are several scientific reasons why serial killer cases get great attention in society. For the record, such action can never be justified and is not something to be proud of. One example is Jeffrey Dahmer, whose vicious story was even picked up by Netflix in 'Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story'.
The first scientific reason, humans have a desire but are afraid to be 'close' to risk. For example, we would be scared to death of facing a lion head-on in a large prairie, but we would pay to enter a zoo and hope that the lion would come toward us.
Another example, when riding a roller coaster. We know it's dangerous but with the safeguards provided by rides providers, the experience of approaching risk without actually being affected by the risk becomes an interesting thing. Looking for adrenaline, simply put.
Furthermore, although we cannot close our eyes that serial killings are really around us, statistics present the fact that the possibility of us becoming victims is not that great. Because of this, serial killer cases are dark and deep, quite mysterious, so many people want to know about them.
According to the World Population Review, it is estimated that serial killings account for less than 1% of total homicides, placing a person's total risk at less than 1 in 20,000. Additional info, the number has decreased.
However, this does not mean that this small number is insignificant because it is still a human life. There is always the possibility of something bad happening to someone. By understanding how serial killers work and what they want, we can minimize the chances of falling victim to them -- at least in theory. In short, listening to cases like Dahmer et al is like an exercise in self-defence.
