Should Be Jailed, Foolish Startup Founder Even Lives in a Luxury House

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the Theranos startup who was caught cheating, turns out to be still living in a spree in a luxurious house. Even though he was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison in connection with a fraud case committed by his company.

Holmes was found guilty in early January 2022 of defrauding investors. He was then sentenced to 11 more years in prison in November 2022.

Holmes was ordered to turn himself in to jail on April 27, 2023. But he appealed his sentence and asked a judge to let him remain free beyond April while his appeals process continues.

However, prosecutors said Holmes should still turn himself in as planned in April 2023 and be behind bars unless acquitted in a new trial.

"The time has come for Elizabeth Holmes to be held accountable for her crimes committed nearly a decade ago. There are not two systems of justice - one for the rich and one for the poor," prosecutors said in the latest court documents. (23/1/2023).

While waiting for his appeal to proceed, Holmes is currently living in a luxurious house with his partner William Evans and their two children. According to the latest court documents, Holmes and his family's expenses amount to USD 13,000 or Rp. 194 million per month.

Prosecutors claimed Holmes' location and financial situation allowed the 38-year-old woman to flee the country. Because of that the prosecutor argued that Holmes should be transferred to prison.

As it turns out, according to the same court documents Holmes once bought a one-way plane ticket to Mexico just days after being found guilty on January 3, 2022. The flight was scheduled to depart on January 26, 2022, and became known to the US government on January 23, 2022.

Holmes founded the health startup Theranos after dropping out of Stanford University at the age of 19. The company's valuation immediately skyrocketed after claiming it could develop a device that could diagnose disease with just a drop of blood.

Theranos' success made Holmes one of the richest women in the world. But Holmes's ugliness began to be sniffed after the Wall Street Journal published an article doubting the diagnostic technology made by Theranos.
