AI Predicts Floods Google Flood Hub Expands To 80 Countries

Because climate change is becoming more pronounced, we can enjoy extreme heat during the day followed by rain and storms in the evening. It is common in cities like Kuala Lumpur that floods occur suddenly. Flood Hub is an artificial intelligence (AI) from Google that can predict when a flood will occur.

This week the Flood Hub service was further expanded to 60 countries with it now covering 80 countries in total. The countries that Flood Hub monitors are located in Africa, South America, Central America, the Asia-Pacific region, and Europe. With this, areas at risk of flooding that house 460 million people in the world can now receive warnings up to 7 days in advance. This is an improvement from the previous 48-hour warning.

Flood Hub collects publicly available data, weather forecasts, and satellite images. The Hydrologic Model and Flood Model are then used to predict the affected area and the height of the flood water that will hit. In the near future Google plans to integrate Flood Hub into Maps and Google Alerts.
