Apple Finds Solution for Under-Screen Face ID by Turning Off Sub-Pixels

The idea of the perfect iPhone was once presented by Jony Ive, it was; a device with a single piece of glass on the front that was immersive with no bezels, no notches, no holes and no distractions. Although Ive has left Apple, the vision for such an iPhone is still in development.

Apple seems to have found a way to integrate Face ID technology under the screen, without interfering with the infrared sensor signal. How? Apple found a way to use Face ID under the screen by ensuring that the sub-pixels of the screen panel near the sensor are turned off so that the sensor's light can penetrate the screen.

Apple is confident that it will not disrupt the experience of using the screen because it will not be clearly visible to the human eye when these sub-pixels are turned off. Then to ensure that the content display is still beautiful, other sub-pixels near the sensor will light up with the color of the sub-pixel that is temporarily turned off.

The individual wires on each LED responsible for the sub-pixel will also be turned off to once again ensure the best infrared signal can pass through. It is not yet certain when under-screen Face ID will be used on the iPhone because it was first rumored for the iPhone 14, then the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 are said to still have a small notch. Let's all look forward to the iPhone with a truly immersive frameless screen.
