Malaysia has officially launched the Strategic Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure. This makes Malaysia the first country in the region to activate a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem with all software using local competencies.
Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching said the move marks a significant step in the country’s AI development, as the use of the public domain model and placing servers in the country will enhance AI sovereignty by ensuring data is processed locally, thus protecting user privacy and data security.
The uniqueness of this project is that the data will be stored in Malaysia, it will be managed by Malaysians, and it will be used by Malaysians. The Strategic Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure is described as the country’s first complete national AI infrastructure, the platform is designed to empower governments, businesses and universities to harness AI to improve services, increase productivity and drive innovation.
Also launched this week is Malaysia’s first sovereign generative AI environment powered by the AlterMatic DT250 AI Server and using the open source DeepSeek LLM. Early adopters of this generative AI environment include the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Communications, Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad (PNSB), Cyberview Sdn Bhd and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
