Xreal Project Aura Glasses Will Also Use Android XR

The capabilities of Android XR smart glasses were shown off this morning at Google I/O with support for four categories of wearable devices. Samsung, Gentle Monster, Warby Parker and Kering Eyewear were the first four companies announced to use Android XR. After the Google I/O keynote, Xreal announced their Project Aura smart glasses that also use Android XR.

Based on the image above, Project Aura has an additional sensor on the nosepiece that is different from the Google glasses prototype. Two cameras are placed on both ends of the glasses frame. It is not clear whether Project Aura is a screenless smart glasses or a pair of glasses with MR technology support.

Xreal has previously launched several MR glasses with see-through optics. We tested both at MWC Shanghai and Snapdragon Summit. Xreal's implementation is more like HoloLens where images are reflected onto the glasses' lenses to make them appear to float in the real world. Google's prototype embeds the screen directly into the lenses, making the glasses lighter and thinner.

Xreal says they are targeting sales by the end of this year or early next year but prices have not been announced.
