US Urged to Stop Warning Banning Use of Chinese-Made AI Chips by Other Countries

President Biden's ban on buying artificial intelligence (AI) chips was lifted last week, freeing Malaysia from being held to a quota. But in the same week, the US Department of Commerce issued a warning to all countries in the world not to use Chinese-made AI chips.

China yesterday called on the US to "immediately correct its mistakes" and stop this "discriminatory" measure. In a statement issued by the US Department of Commerce, the use of chips such as the Huawei Ascend 910C would violate technology export controls imposed on them. Although the chips are manufactured by Huawei in China, the US-owned technology is believed to be used without permission. Therefore, users of these chips could face penalties from the US.

China's warning came on the same day Malaysia announced a Strategic Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure using Huawei's AI chips. It was the first time Huawei's AI browser and DeepSeek public language model have been used outside China since the technology restrictions were imposed. There has been no official statement from the Trump administration on whether Malaysia will be penalized for violating the warning.
