The early 2000s, especially around 2010-2015, saw the use of BitTorrent download services as the most popular way for people to download content. In fact, at one time, BitTorrent traffic was a big reason why people used the internet at that time.
Among the popular piracy websites that used BitTorrent technology were The Pirate Bay and P2Planet which allowed people to share and download video files of television series, movies, computer game software and others.
Recently, it was reported that the owner of P2Planet around 2011-2014, a 59-year-old man from Greece, was fined 10,000 Euros (~RM49 thousand) and will be imprisoned for five years.
The court found that in 2014, the website had around 44,000 users and hosted 14,000 torrent files.
His details and those of other users on the website were exposed through a DDoS attack that took down the website's database, and it is widely believed that this is how the Greek government found a way to arrest this individual.
For the past few years, the Greek government has said that they will not compromise on piracy issues. In fact, when the owner of P2Planet was convicted, he was immediately arrested by the police and put in prison, although he is still awaiting the outcome of his appeal.
