OpenAI today announced OpenAI for Government, a specialized service offered to the government. This is OpenAI’s effort to support the US government’s efforts to improve the capabilities of government workers and help reduce bureaucracy and paperwork. Early adopters of OpenAI for Government include the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA, NIH, and the Treasury Department.
In conjunction with today’s announcement, OpenAI received a $200 million contract from the US Department of Defense to help identify how AI can transform its government operations. Artificial intelligence (AI) will also be used to address critical national security challenges in both the warfighting and enterprise domains.
Today’s OpenAI announcement comes nearly two weeks after Anthropic launched its Claude Gov model, which was developed specifically for government operations such as strategic planning, operational support, and intelligence analysis. According to Anthropic, Claude Gov is already being used by several agencies at the highest levels of US national security, with access restricted to those operating in environments requiring classified information.
