Lately, there has been much talk about the development of smart cities around Malaysia, and with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of the development of Kota Madani with the integration of AI and other technologies, this is the best opportunity for Malaysia as the ASEAN chair this year to showcase our capabilities in integrating modern technology in urban development.

Today, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo officiated the 100-day countdown to the launch of the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL25). It will be held from 17 to 19 September 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and will be organised by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation and Digital Nasional Berhad, the company behind the development of Malaysia’s 5G network.

The Smart City Expo World Congress event is well-known among professionals in the urban planning and development industry, and was started by Fira de Barcelona in 2011, and has expanded to other cities such as Santiago del Estero in Argentina, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Shanghai in China and now, for the first time in Southeast Asia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The event will be held under the theme “AI Cities: Shaping Our Digital Future”, and is seen as aiming to make Malaysia a regional hub for smart city innovation, collaboration between government and private companies and also the development of more inclusive digital technologies.

SCEKL25 is expected to be attended by over 10 thousand participants, including 300 companies, 2000 representatives of companies, industry and government and over 100 speakers from 20 countries who will talk about the latest best practices in the planning and development process of new cities.

Meanwhile, this event will also be sponsored by leading global technology brands such as Dell, Intel, Ericsson, Huawei, Malaysia Smart Cities Alliance (MSCA), Smart Cities Network, Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), and Malaysia PropTech Association.
