Trump Extends TikTok Deadline – Will Not Ban for Another 90 Days

The TikTok application should have been banned in the United States since January 2025. However, since the change of presidency, Donald Trump as the new President of the United States has extended the deadline for TikTok, and asked that it be sold to a company in the country to continue operations.

Since ordering TikTok to be sold, Donald Trump has given TikTok additional time, and this time, the third time the United States has extended the deadline, and given another 90 days for the service to be sold to an American company. Through the new extension, TikTok is given until September 17, 2025 to be sold to an American company, or its access to the country will be blocked.

The United States has previously accused TikTok of posing a national security threat because it is owned by a Chinese company, and has asked that the country's operations be sold to an American company to continue operations. However, the matter is subject to various things, and also needs to obtain permission from the authorities in China. It is also unknown whether Bytedance wants to sell it, or whether the Chinese government will allow it.

Previously, in early January 2025, Bytedance was set to display a notice that TikTok, Capcut and several other apps were ceasing operations in the United States – thus giving a signal that they were ready to cease operations in the country. With this new extension, it is unknown how many more times Donald Trump will extend the sale date for TikTok.
