In 2022, the AlphaFold artificial intelligence developed by Google Deepmind managed to find more than 200 million protein structures that can be used to produce drugs. It speeds up scientists to find the right protein structure for the disease they want to treat without doing it manually and taking hundreds of years.
From this success, Isomorphic Labs was established by Deepmind specifically to study producing various disease treatments using AI. Through the latest model AlphaFold 3, Isomorphic Labs is now preparing to conduct clinical trials of cancer treatment using drugs generated by AI.
Isomorphic Labs did not say what the drug being developed can do or the type of cancer it targets. What is certain is that within three years after AlphaFold was announced, it will be ready to test the developed drug because it usually takes longer before clinical trials can be conducted.
Cancer is among the five diseases that cause the highest death in the world. The advancement of scientific understanding of mRNA technology that has been rapidly developing post-pandemic has enabled several vaccines to be developed by Moderna, Pfizer, BioNTech and Amazon over the past three years. Dr Ugur Sahin and Dr Ozlem Tureci, two scientists who created the Comirnaty vaccine at BioNTech, predict that a vaccine against cancer will become a reality before 2030.
