The government is considering implementing new regulations that will require identity verification for all advertisers on social media such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. This is aimed at strengthening efforts to combat the growing concern of online fraud.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is drafting online safety regulations and codes as part of the new regulatory framework being drafted. In this process, MCMC is also reviewing the approaches implemented in countries such as Singapore and Taiwan as a reference.
Latest data shows that more than 32,000 fraudulent content items were removed from digital platforms during January to April 2025, while the total losses recorded due to online fraud almost reached RM800 million. As of July 15, 2025, more than 46,000 fraudulent content items had been taken down.
Although the content is usually uploaded by third-party users, no social media platform has been prosecuted in court so far. However, the government will continue to intensify efforts and collaboration with platform providers to comprehensively address fraud issues including false advertisements, gambling activities and the sale of unregistered products.
