OpenAI announced the Stargate Project data center project earlier this year, which is a $500 billion AI infrastructure development project for the United States. It will be led by OpenAI with the help of various other AI investment and technology companies such as Softbank and Oracle.
Recently, OpenAI announced the development of another data center together with Oracle, now estimated to have a power requirement of 4.5GW and will use 2 million AI processing chips.
The development of the new Stargate data center is said to be slightly different from the data center construction agreement revealed earlier this year. In the agreement, OpenAI, Softbank, MGX and Oracle will seek funding and establish 20 data centers with an investment of $500 billion over four years. The Stargate 1 site, the location of the first Stargate data center, is in Abilene, Texas.
The Stargate Project infrastructure announced earlier this year is expected to require 10GW of electrical power to power not only the data center and the servers inside, but also the internet network and various other infrastructure.
For this newly announced project, OpenAi says it will add 4.5GW of electrical power to power 2 million additional AI processing chips. As you know, the Stargate Project announced earlier this year will use NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra AI processing chips that use 1.4kW of power for each graphics card.
It is not yet known if the latest Stargate Project will use those graphics cards or NVIDIA Rubin Ultra which will use 3.4kW of power, which is expected to be launched in 2027.
OpenAI also says that the opening of this new data center will generate 100 thousand new jobs not only in terms of data center development and operation, but also in terms of the energy sector that will be needed to power the data center.
